What is the biggest challenge for direct sellers/home party planners? It’s finding people interested in buying your products, hostesses, or people looking to start a homebased business. I was reading one of Jackie Ulmer’s blog posts and it resonated with me on what she said … instead of asking yourself where to find people, ask yourself what are you willing to do to find people.

The truth is people are everywhere. Of course not everyone you meet is interested or a candidate. But there are people everywhere and how you reach out to people is up to you. But the message is powerful: if you want to succeed in your direct sales business, you must reach out to people.

Why it’s hard

I confess to finding pushy salespeople a big turn-off. Therefore, I often don’t reach out to people as often as I should because of my own beliefs. And the danger in this thinking is that you assume things about people that may or may not be true. Maybe they’re not interested in anything you have to offer but you won’t know if you automatically make up your mind about that person’s circumstances without knowing all the facts.

Do you really know if someone’s interested in starting a business? Of course not unless that person tells you: “I’m not interested”. Until that’s the case, it’s best not to make any assumptions. Sometimes I buy products because there’s a coupon, a special offer, or someone just asked me if I needed anything.

The message is this: you don’t know if someone’s in the market for your products or looking to start a homebased business until there’s an opportunity to engage in a conversation with that person. So be open minded and be ready to make that connection.

So the next time you find yourself saying things like “I don’t think she would be interested in the products I’m selling” or “she doesn’t seem like the entrepreneurial type”, STOP assuming things.
